Looking for a deal on a decent 50cc dirt bike for my kid... doesn't have to be anything special as long as it runs solid... I can clean up the rest...
Anyone sees anything or has anything let me know...
Thanks!
Mike
Lemme check with my neighbor. He was just telling me he wanted to upgrade his son's ride......an entry level KTM where the max weight is something like 70 lbs.
I'll look into it further if it's something you may be interested in.

What are you looking to spend?
When I start my KTM in the morning, rules are broken. Its inevitable...

Not looking to break the bank... the KTM would be awesome but probably more then I'm willing to go right now...
I'd like to stay under $400.00 hence why I'm willing to do some cleanup etc as long as the motor/tranny is good...
Anyone have any experience with the chinese honda knockoffs? There is one in Wilmington on CL I am going to look at for $180.00... needs a fender, front brake lever and some cleaning but supposedly runs great.
The quality varies a LOT. Some are good lil rigs that are direct parts swappable with the genuine article. Others are true abominations that no child should ever be allowed to sit upon, cheap metal, porus castings that crack out of the crate, and no direct fit spare parts to be had even if you buy another 'identical' bike from the same seller.

Is a 114 too big?

Any brand I shld look for or stay away from?
And ya a 114 is too big... he's 5![]()
here you go CRF 50 under $400

You should be able to find a decent Honda 50 for around that.
And, once your son "outgrows" it you can resell it without losing much money unlike a cheap knockoff.
Of course, you'll probably just want to keep it for yourself and put a bigboy kit on it and ride it yourself.
So, stick with a Honda. I'll keep my eyes out for one.... and don't even think about sneaking over to my house and taking my son's.

I actually ended up grabbing the knockoff today for $160.00... starts first half a kick and rides around great... seems real solid... just needs to be cleaned up which isn't a problem... I even just ordered a new set of plastics for it cheap!!
Thanks for the replies.... now to the next step... where to get good kids mx gear locally... I want to see it before I buy it ya know...
Thanks!
Mike
So I ended up buying the knockoff from CL... got it for $160.00... starts first kick, no choke every time... actually pretty fun to ride!!!
I tore it down to the frame and went through every bit... ended up replacing a couple of bolts that I didn't like the looks of and the throttle cable because it was stretched... lots of sanding, priming and painting... a new set of plastics for $39.00 and a recovered seat and it's looking as good as it runs!!!
The "restoration":
My father-in-law started tearing it down before I could snap a few shots but here is the before photos from the CL posting:
The tear down, clean and repaint:
The rebuild:
The final product:
I think it came out pretty good... and I will say this... it seems to be made pretty well... The cable I bought was for an actual CRF50 and it fit perfect... I also borrowed a set of training wheels for it from a friend with a CRF50 and those fit (Need to teach the little guy throttle control and braking first ya know!!) So I hope honda parts continue to fit although there is an abundance of places to buy from online...
That's it I guess... it's snowing outside so I figured you'd all have some time to look at my pics
Mike

Your little boy is going to have a *Great* Christmas! Even at my age, finding a motorcycle under the tree on Christmas morning is just the best! (It doesn't even matter what kind, or how big it is!)
Thanks again for the comments... it was fun to work on... When done my father-in-law and I were sitting there looking at it and I say... "I wanna be 5 and getting a dirtbike for christmas!"... he just wants to learn how to stunt on it... I threatened to take the key but he said he'd just cut the ground lol
Guess I have to start looking for a bike for myself... can't let him ride alone!!!![]()
Looks great
