well, I suggest at least 100/300 coverage. God fordid you injure someone in an accident and they end up going after everything you own. $20k does not go far in an accident with any serious injuries.

I switched to Liberty Mutual and saved a few hundred/year with the same coverage

Let me know if you want a quote
V, the last two individuals are right, as a homeowner bear minimum you should be at is 100/300 on parts 3, 5, and 12. I can take a look at what you have, make recommendations and run a quote if you want, just let me know.
regarding the umbrella comment, if anyone is interested, here in MA i can do an umbrella with only 100/300 on the auto. i should point out, this is specific to liberty mutual. if you have another carrier, you'll need 250/500.
if anyone hasn't caught on, i work for liberty mutual. we are a direct writer and i'm not an independent agent. we've been in MA for almost 100 years and we are the only fortune 100 company in MA. i've held my insurance with liberty for 10+ years before i ever went to work for them, i know i have the best product out there.

Pardon my ignorance...what is an "umbrella" policy?
Here's what we have...2 vehicles, one bike, one house.

Sure your getting screwed but it's their right to screw you until you figure it out.
I'm in NH but we pay under $1100 a year for full coverage on
2004 Nissan Titan
2009 Subarun Outback
And my bike insuranse is $149 a year for full coverage.
2008 Kawasaki Versys 650
1972 Honda CL70
Umbrella policies cover liability above and beyond the limits set in your auto and home owners policies.
Say for instance you have 100/300 coverage on your car and you cause an accident where a 3rd party is seriously injured to the tune of $600,000 in medical bills. Your auto policy will pay out the $100,000 limit for a single person and after being sued, you will be responsible for paying the remaining $500,000. If you can't pay that, they can go after your assets (house included) to get the money they are owed.
If you had an umbrella policy, you would have additional coverage up to whatever limit is chosen. 1-2 million is fairly common. That $500,000 would then be payed from your umbrella policy and you wouldn't risk losing your house and posessions.
Surprisingly, a $1,000,000 umbrella policy can be less than $20 a month.

Hey V! I would just be careful with certain out of state companies. Working for an insurance agency in Ma we make sure people have certain coverages. make sure you have parts 5 and 12 since they cover you out of state or in any public way! I wouldnt recommend state minimum but with the economy you have to do what you have to do. Also with some of these out of state companies there giving you discounts and lowers rates for first year or 6 months and then jack it up after! Ive had people come in receiving good student and 65 and older discounts! As well as god forbid you have to file a claim they are a pain to get a hold of and to get someone out to look at your car because well they are out of state and dont work with in state agents. And make sure you have no deductible on glass if you have the comprehensive on your policy since well most mass companies write you with free glass and progressive geico etc write you with a 100 dollar deductible! Good Luck with everything and if you have any questions feel free to ask!
P.S. as for the refund checks, that wasnt one specific company and it wasnt for the rates on your bikes. What happened was Insurance Companies werent going in and depreciating bike values. So when your bike is insured it has a value and thats for any future claim purposes. Every year bikes and autos depreciate a little and well if your in an accident its not worth what it was when you first bought it! So a few people said hey my bikes not worth 8 grand anymore ive had it 10 years and if im in an accident im not going to get the orginal value to i shouldnt have to pay insurance on the original value, so insurance companies lost the lawsuit and had to go in and fix all motorcycle policies and send refunds. My dad received ALOT of money from his company!
see now I have a question on this, if my car is hit, and depreciates in value, it is known, then how come you cannot claim depreciation with a claim???? I was told it's against the law in MA to do that, because they're supposively fixed to "as new". So how can that be legal, if it is known that the value depreciates but is not claimable
