Being as we have milked our limping laptop for too many years and windows XP is being unsupported come April 8, we need a new portable brain. Wife wants one with the removable screen and we're both used to Windows so the question is...which one do you computer gurus think is worth buying. I'm not a computer dude and after looking around online I become snow blind. Looking to stay around $1k or less with mostly business and financial programs being used. microsoft office, Quicken and such. Any wisdom on the removable screen type is appreciated. Not totally against the swivel, spinning type. Thanks
Brad

Wish I could help you, but have no experience with the detachable. I have played with a few of Samsung's ultra booksand they are pretty awesome. There was a pretty decent model that was a refurbished one at best buy for a core i7 for $529.99 which is a steal. I'm not sure if the ativ q is out yet, but it was a very interesting concept half a year ago when I read it. It is a hybrid windows and android system. A little heavier than a tablet, lighter than a conventional laptop. I haven't caught up with it lately, but at the time it was my next laptop purchase wish list...
Whatever you do, make sure it has Windows 7. 8 blows.

If you're set on a convertible, you're going to need Windows 8. Windows 7 sucks at touchscreen use. Windows 8, despite how much I despise it, is at least halfway competent as a touchscreen OS.
But I think if you want a laptop and a tablet, you should get a laptop and a tablet. Nothing I've ever used works well as both. Get a $700-800 laptop (you can get a lot of power for that much) and a Nexus 7.

For business/financial/office/internet you don't need much. A $500 laptop would probably be plenty. Pictures and videos you want more HD space. Games you want more Ram and processor power and a better video card. Video and photo editing you'll want decent processor and alot of ram. But business apps internet basic computer functions.. you need a basic computer no point in spending money on more when you're not going to use any of it's potential. 4gb ram, i5 dual core processor, 250gb+ HD, whatever size you want for screen and windows 7.
Get the seperate tablet for surfing the net and playing candy crush. I like the 7" size much better than the 10" size. It's just bulky and ugly. The 7" can be easily held and used with one hand and is easy to carry with you when you go out. Most of the detachable keyboard and swivel computers are still big and bulky and not convenient at all.
That was one of my bigger issues. I have a feeling the Mrs. would rather have that once the homework on this stuff is done. I keep hearing of Windows 8 sucking but I don't know enough about it, or other OS's for that matter, to make that call. I do however trust in the NESR community. At least I have info and not sales fluff. Thanks for the other info Tunertype. I turn wrenches and swing a hammer so any extra help is appreciated. Ass of a brother is in computers and tells me I have the PICNIC problem when ever I call for help. Problem In Chair Not In Computer. His trim work and siding angles looks like shit too! Thanks for the info guys. I will simplify things.

When I bought I got an I5* (last year) from dell
I wanted flip screen yada yada but then the price was as high as buying a good laptop PLUS an Ipad
I can say that we got an ASUS and it sucks so no to them
I was surprised that the I3,I5, I7 were a family of units with even some 5 besting low end I7.

Good to know. The wife was just at wallyworld and sent a text she saw an I5 for $600. She didn't jump cuz she knows maybe less than I do about these things. The dell laptop we have is going on 7 years now so can't complain about the old dell at all. We have a gateway pc and have had no problems. Any idea of how their laptops are?

Between homework on new scuba equipment and this, I'm getting tired of surfing. Thanks for the link.
