I have had great luck with my HP laptops. There are some
really good deals at some of the big box stores now too.

Wife loves her Dell 1525. Nice and light plenty of power and nice display. And she got it for less than 600.00 with a printer copier as part of the bundle.

+1 on the Mac. Great stuff and you can also run Windows on it if you need to.

Although the MacBook is hair more expensive than a comparable PC (about $1200 vs $1400 for a comparable ThinkPad, although that's based on a 3rd-party service plan on the latter and AppleCare on the former), the better OS and the build quality make it worthwhile, IMO.

Personally, I'd stay away from the bargain-priced laptops (anything substantially below $1k); I've seen several of them fail well before I'd expect a quality laptop to do so.

Standard Macbook should be more than adequate. You can also get smoking deals on refurbs from the Apple store online.

It should work with Windows Parallel if it's a USB interface.

I work for an IT company and I always recommend Macbooks...especially for girls. There is little to no upkeep, virus trouble, the OS is extremely easy to use and installs/peripherals(mice, external monitors etc) are automatically recognized and installed 99% of the time. Just make sure to buy the extended AppleCare. Most likely nothing will happen but its great to have. I personally own a Macbook that is 2 years old and I love it.

    Re: which laptop?

BTW, if you're looking for a Mac, check out MacMall – #1 Mac Store, iPod nano, Mac Intel, Mac Computers & LCD TVs. If you're on a budget, they have discontinued models for short money. Just after they released the MacBook Pros with the 2.5GHz Intel processors, I picked up a discontinued 15" 2.4GHz model w/ Mac OS X (10.5.1), loaded w/ 4GB RAM, 200GB Hard Disk, and Parallels w/ Windows XP installed as well for just under $2K, with about $300 worth of rebates.

The MacBooks start at $1450 w/ $150 rebate now (2.2GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 120GB HD).

I have to agree with Ryan. Security by obscurity is the mac way. osX gets boring really quick no matter how 'simple' to use. Simplicity comes at a price and it really shows its weakness in some of its higher end apps.

Visit techbargains.com, keep an eye on the Dell specials, buy whatever you want. Opinions on computers are like assholes. Everyone has one and most of them are full of shit.

    Re: which laptop?

And by all means, if you feel you need to spend a lot to get a "good" computer, go nuts.

I personally would look to be in the $600-$750 range for a decent machine on sale, but I only support 750+ users, 90% of which are on my laptops so my opinion probably isn't as good as others who own maybe two machines.
