    Re: Quitting Smoking, Today!

awesome....good luck...i smoked for ~30 years and quit about 10 years ago. Hardest thing I ever did...and absolutely worth it.

Not sure how you're doing it. I used the patch and just committed to following the instructions...even the stupid little things the asked me to do. The point wasnt the silly activities themselves...the point was the willingness to do what ever they said.

So...pick a program, follow the directions, and DONT GIVE UP!!!

Good job. You can do it. I quite last New Years. It was like my 20th time trying. I had cut down over the previous months to about 4-7 per day. and New Years eve was my last smoke.

I started to really have a tough time about 3 months into it. Then I went to LRRS and shattered my wrist and discovered Oxy. That really helped mne through the tough times. Now I know I will never need smokes again.

By the way. This is funny.

Best decision you'll ever make. I was lucky enough to hate smoking the few times I tried it as a kid, but my grandfather and father both smoked themselves to death and its a horrible thing to watch.

Quitting might suck, but its a hell of a lot better than the alternative!

    Good luck.

I smoked about 2 packs a day for about 8 years and have been quit for about 6 now.

I used the gum....shit worked for a while and then it came down to self control.

Like Dave said, it's well worth it.

I quit years ago. The only things that have been troublesome were any combination of coffee, Going out drinking, and having friends that smoke all the time. Each by themselves were harmless. Good luck.

Good luck, it was the hardest thing i ever did.

if you falter and have the just 1... if it is a month or two out. go out buy a pack of full flavor camel wides tear off the filters and smoke the whole dam pack in one sitting.. you will make yourself sick.. but the result, i found, helped.

    Re: Quitting Smoking, Today!

A friend of mine is on the patch right now and has been having a hard time, from what he's saying. He still smoke 4-5 a day. I thought you were supposed to stop completly on the patch? Anyway...it will be rough on your mood swings, patience and all that stuff. Just try to stay away from people for a little while and concentrate on your goal...it's well worth the effort, you'll feel so much better and your lungs/health will thank you for it.

    Good luck!!!

my wife just quit over the summer.

her doctor gave her some Meds that worked really well for her. I forget what name it was, but it started with a C. I'll ask her when I talk to her tonight.

Do you have a wife/girlfriend? The strategy we devised for my ex included some 'distractions' when he had cravings and it worked really well He managed to quit cold turkey and hasn't smoked in 5 years.

    Re: Quitting Smoking, Today!

speaking from the perspective of someone who has started and stopped repeatedly over the past 20 years.. (I quit in January and aside from a 3 week relapse when my friend died, I have stayed quit)..

the key is break the associations.
drinking and smoking.. so don't drink.
    coffe and smoking.. avoid coffee..
smoking after sex.. you get the idea.

your mind maps things together, so if you break the associations you'll be better off, but for now you may just be best avoiding the things that go with smoking in your head.

also, smoking makes you take deep breaths(drags) so one thing you can do if take deep breaths when quitting and stressed. the additional oxygen and cleansing effect of deep breathing can help minimize the effect of the stresses that can drive you past the limits of your will.

good advice.. also try to stay away from the places you used to smoke.. time to hang out with those non smoking friends more..
