    2014 MotoGP class changes?

Alright lemme see if I can get this straight: CRT class is no longer and is now called OPEN class? I'm confused about who gets 5 engines and who gets 12 engines for the season as well as having a 20 liter gas limit?

Repsol Honda, LCR Honda and I believe Bautista, Yamaha and Tech 3 are the prototype factory bikes. they have 5 engines and 20 liters of fuel. everyone else is Open class and has to run the spec ECU and software but they get 12 engines and 24 liters.

    From the motogp website...

MotoGP™ - As of the 2012 season, the maximum engine displacement permitted is 1000cc with a maximum of four cylinders and maximum bore of 81 mm - 2-stroke engines are not allowed. A maximum of 5 engines may be used by each permanent contracted rider for all the scheduled races of the season. Penalty for infringement of this means the rider will start from the pit lane 10 seconds after the start of the race.

From 2014, teams not directly entered by one of the major manufacturers as a factory team or satellite outfit, will be categorized in the so-called “Open class”. Whilst all factory teams (MSMA entries) will have to use the spec Magneti Marelli hardware with their own software, the “Open class”, regardless of its mechanical make-up, will run the spec hardware as well as software. From a mechanical standpoint, the “Open class” in 2014 will consists of full-blown prototypes (with Magneti Marelli software), prototype chassis with factory-spec engines, as well as heavily tuned production engines in prototype chassis.

From 2007 onwards the FIM regulated that engines were limited a maximum fuel capacity of 21 litres in MotoGP class, with 2014 seeing a further drop to 20 litres. The so-called “Open class” may run up to 24 litres.

So Everyone is at 20 Liters, and the Open Class is at 24

Only 5 engines for the whole season?? What if a rider does a lot of crashing? Does that engine limit include engines used in practice? The new rules sound like Obamacare - a penalty for being successful.

yes 5 engines for the whole season. practice, qualifying, race.
if a guy crashes a lot he's losing a ton of points so a penalty of starting from the back of the grid probably won't be a big deal for using a 6th engine.

I meant crashing during practice, etc. Of course binning it during a race is sometimes beyond a rider's control too though.
