I love a big bore 2 stroke as much as the next guy (probably more), but are people actually paying $10k for these? They're not very usable in the woods around here. Plated would be sweet, and robbing that motor for something else plated would be cool, but I don't see the value in a pure dirt bike unless it's going into a collection.

I usually see them in the 5 to 7 range. Some oddball dreamers like this guy ask the world for them. They are really borderline useless, especially around here. Maybe out in wide open middle america you can find a use for them. Its like having a big block chevelle and every street is a short dead end. Collectors are starting to go wild for them though but i dont see them every being worth $10k unless its a minty rare one and even then. i think Kaplan is driving up the prices of these locally since he tends buy any one he can find.

Yeah, same page. I get that asking prices aren't selling prices. I'd have a hard time parting with $5k for a non-plated one, and I buy tons of stupid shit. I'd probably ride it twice a year in second gear and spend the rest of the year staring at it.

I wonder how those Italian parts would hold up with such low miles. I could convince myself it's a brand new bike and worth it but I think everything would fail pretty quickly. Maybe just a museum piece now?

To me, not much more of a problem than with any long-sat bike -- like dried out rubber-plastic components, old tires, battery etc. and yes some particular Ducati upgrades needed, like heavier battery and starter cables. And being a Ducati, it will need timing belts. For that money you should be able to find a very good 900SS which is a better bike all around. IMO of course.

e.g., here's a 900SS, says service is up to date, including timing belts, but no mention of last valve clearance check-adjust:

Yes they did. And mass is clamping down on converting those vt regs now so it's a double whammy. I can't still register in VT but it's a bit of a pain.
