I've decided to trade the 954RR for an 05 Suzi DR-Z Supermoto (black, the faster color). Any feedback on these bikes???

Gives new meaning to it all
If not today nor yet tomorrow
then some other day
I'll take seven lives for one
And then my only father's son
As sure as I did ever love him
I am not afraid
05 DRZ400SM bone stock (for the moment). Most fun I've ever had on two wheels baby!!!
from what i've heard there underpowered.

Thanks Sandy but I was actually looking for opinions from owners or people who've actually ridden them.

I was considering making a similar trade; my R1 is not all that well suited to Vermont's crappier pavement conditions, and the DRZ looks like it would be a blast on the tighter twisties.Originally posted by The Wreck

You wont likely find many people who have owned/ridden them just yet, as they are a fairly new entry to the market. I spoke to my local Suzuki dealer, and they said they only had 2, and both were sold.
However, the salesman himself told me they are "sluggish".
I have an '01 drz that is supermotarded and it is awesome. I can give you the benfit of my experiences with it.
I imagine that the stock bike would be a little underpowered. There are alot of options to make more power. I have the yosh 450 kit in my bike. Falicon makes a 502 kit., and you can get an easy 10 hp by changing the cylinder base gasket to the higher compression one, and swpping the cv carb for a flatslide.
My big complaint with it would be the gearing. My bike has more than enough power to turn the tallest gears I could get for it. at nhis i would have the bike topped out about two thirds of the way down the front stright. I hve clocked it on the highwy, with my buddie's gsxr(which I know is overly optimistic), at 110 mph.
My dr has been super reliable. I have 30+ trackdays on it as well as a bunch of street miles on it and the most I have had to do is change the oil, tires, and one new clutch.
My bike handles great. I swapped a set of rm forks onto it as well as an ohlins shock. I had the forks and the shock revalved by elka, using slightly modified ice racing setup. Everyone that has ridden it has loved it
It is loads of fun around town.
I did a ton of trackdays on it and learned lot. I decided last year I wanted to have a track only bike so I got a 525smr which I also love. It is much lighter and faster than the dr, I love the 6 speed.
I don't know if this helps. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Well, I have at least sat on one in the showroom. The owner of my local dealership has been trying to talk me into buying DL1000 and a DRZ400SM . I am tempted, especially after my trip to Deals Gap this year, Is a DL1000 enuf bike to pull a trailer with a DRZ400SM ?

one of my uncles brothers cousins neighbors saw someone who knew a guy that rode one.
he thought it was under powered![]()
i'm sure if i rode one i'd find it very flat and lacking in the power department, seeing as i think my 640 or 520 ktm's could use about 10 more hp
but then again i'm finding 160hp at the rear wheel on my sportbike is just about right (if it was only a little stronger in the lower revs)

Yeah it's helpful, thanks. I know that it's gonna need some mods and I plan to punch and stroke the motor and have the head cleaned up during the winter. One of the things that attracts me to the DRZ is all of the aftermarket support that the motor has.Originally posted by rg500

Check out www.supermotojunkie.com , there's a few guys on there riding those bikes already. General opinion is what these guys said, a bit underpowered stock, but easily upgraded.
I have an 02 DRZ400S
Love the bike but I don't think I would be happy if it was my only one.
I would have been a buyer for the
950 KTM super moto but that may never get here and now not before 2007. I needed a bike so bought the Gixer.
I think all the single cylinder supermotos currently out there are to whimpy for a sole street bike.
I also think it is obvious that that new BMW HP will be a streetable supermotto soon.
I believe that real world supermottos are still about 2 years away.
Note you could supermotto a used drz for a total of maybe 3500 down the road.. It really just wheels and move the front brake.

You make some valid points but Ive just grown out of the sportbike thing. I think I'd rather have a slow bike that I can ride fast than a fast bike with performance potential that I can only scratch the surface of according to Johnny Law (and traffic). besides, for 1500 bucks you can have a 50+hp DRZ!Originally posted by richw

I can honestly say I enjoy riding my Motard more than the sportbike. I'll have just as much if not more fun riding 100+ miles of dirt/paved roads on the tard as I do with a 400+ mile day on the ONE... It's not fast ennough to get you into to much trouble, yet has power to put a smile on the face. Best part is going from dirt to paved roads. I never thought I'd enjoy dirt roads on a bike but it's a freeken blastOriginally posted by The Wreck

the SV isn't a motard, but it ain't a sportbike either, it's versitile enuf to imitate both this past vacation at Deals Gap has put a lot more thoughts into my head about getting a real motard, as much as I'd like a ktm, it think a suzuki is more in my budget, might look at the yamaha powered MuZ also, I think 50 hp is plenty for a motard, I would think it is hard enuf keeping the front wheel on the ground in the lower gears.
so, can anybody tell me, is the DL1000 enuf bike to trailer a DRZ down to Deals Gap and back?
