I would love to try it out at some point in the near future if that would be something you'd be cool with. Can offer a swap ride on a wild S1k-XR. Thing MOVES.

Just looking to ride one before I go too far down this rabbit hole.

    Re: GS Curious

Curious, why not use the S1000XR you already have? Seems like it'd do just fine for your once or twice a week commute, with the only major difference being shaft drive vs chain. Again, just seems like a lot of overlap between the two bikes for the intended purpose and what I assume will sit parked during winter months and the majority of the week.

    Re: GS Curious

It's a high strung inline 4. It's not as simple as the same bike with a different drive train.

It's fun, and amazing when you open it up, but a good highway commuter it is not.

Is it really that strange that I want to try a GS out?

    Re: GS Curious

Not at all, I think you should totally try a GS out! I guess where I'm coming from is that I don't see you holding onto both and I certainly don't see the value in adding a GS to the stable for the sole purpose of commuting once or twice a week, esp if it's <12 months/yr.

I don't need much of an excuse to buy a bike, but in this comparison I just see too much overlap between an S1000XR and a GS. Sure, one is a boxer and the other is a high strung I4 but ultimately, in my experience, both can accomplish the commute you've somewhat outlined quite well. You may prefer the GS, but then I'd put money on you selling the XR. Or vice-versa.

I never said I'd be looking to keep both. I want to find the best bike for my uses currently, that's all.

While not exactly exciting as a GS, you might see if you can ride a Super Ten. The 2nd gen has everything you're looking for. Also probably the most reliable motorcycle ever made with 24k mile service intervals.

Or maybe do something completely out of left field and try a Guzzi V85TT? They make a huge touring windscreen for it.

    Re: GS Curious

My buddy Jimmy has a MG V100 for sale. https://www.facebook.com/share/giSqLe39DRk6vyUL/

He just doesn't fit the bike. It's riding position somehow bothers him after a few hours. He is shorter at 5'7" so that may be the issue.

Personally I have rented a GS over the years a couple times. The 1250 motor is quick but the bike is about relaxed riding and doesn't like to be pushed hard. The new 1300 GS is a different bike. It loses a lot of the older GS' relaxed nature. Its more sporting and tighter in the ride. I LIKE IT!

New 1300 might be great, but it's also mega spendy. Not looking to drop $22k on a bike.

Ya I hear you. I sold my almost new blue V85TT and my BWM RT to purchase the new GS. It has the mellow vibe of the V85TT and the 100mph comfort pace on the highway of the RT. I may be selling my 890 AVD-R Rally next.

You're welcome to try it out anytime. Somerville will offer plenty of low-speed handling and bump absorbsion testing as you cycle through the ESA settings. :/

I think the BMW demo truck is here at NHMS for bike week... not setup yet but should be by the weekend?

Already messaged him this morning. He's non-responsive. That is THE color too.

He said he's 75 so might not login all the time. But at that price I imagine he's getting some attention.

Talked to him tonight. Waiting on shipping quotes, but looks promising as long as I get a shipper to cooperate.

Really? You're buying a massive mile munching machine from halfway across the US...and you're going to ship it?

    Sweet bike though.

Yeah, 28 hour ride. I'd spend 3x the cost of shipping just on hotel rooms, nevermind airfare, food, gas, and everything else. Plus I don't have the time right now.

    Iron Butt!

Hell, how much you want to pay me to go get it for you? (said somewhat sarcastically and somewhat seriously)
