So for all you NH riders just wondering what your thoughts are on the new Motorcycle Noise Emission Regulation HB1442? 92 DB @ idle +2 DB variance and for 3-4 cylinder engines 100 DB or less @ 5K...complete BS

Does anyone know when the senate is voting on it?
Wirelessly posted (Blackberry Tour)
So if a stock gsxr1k is 86db and the "pretty bloody loud" limit is only 6db higher at 92, I would tend to assume most aftermarket exhaust systems, whether it be a slip on or full, would bring the bike very close to that.Originally Posted by Wanderer

A. Since sound files are hard to hear online, it is best to compare them to other brands. The Yoshimura RS-3 Zyclone systems are one of the quietest systems on the market today that still offer good performance gains with minimal restriction. RS-3 Zyclone systems are 90-92dB while RS-3 Race systems are 95dB. All measurements are taken at the industry standard of 20" away from the turndown tip at a 45-degree angle out from the tip. The motor is revved and held at 4,000 rpm in neutral. A reading is then taken and recorded. Round Zyclone systems are 95dB while round race systems are 101-105db depending on model"
Note, those measurements are at 4000rpm - NOT idle which would be a good amount lower.
Remember, the decibel scale is logarithmic. 'Only' 6db higher is six times louder.
Given the gsxr used for the example from motorcycle-usa.com idles around 1100-1300rpm, thats a pretty huge difference between that and Yoshimura's test at 4000rpm.
If the non-idle test was used (and please note, by the text of the bill the tests are OR, not AND) it'd be held at 5000 rpm and have a limit of 100db. The non-race systems would very likely pass this.

nothing on website about senate yet, not sure when crossover happens or what order bills will be taken up

I actually think people have a right to not be deafened by ridiculously loud exhaust systems.
Its ok if you use them on a track.
People can wear ear plugs or leave.
When you ride by someones house at every hour of the night it is infringing on their rights.
Also, the studies that I have seen disprove the belief that "loud pipes save lives".

Not to mention 100db is still really damn loud, so I really have no sympathy for people that fail. There's one guy in the Vermont area that put a straight pipe on his R6. It sounds horrible and is ear splittingly loud. If you don't think that is infringing on other people's space, you're nuts.

Aren't you happy you invited all the Masshole to your state

We, as motorcyclists, frankly need to grow the fuck up.
We want to be treated specially - in an ideal world things like splitting lanes, our own parking, lower tolls etc would be great. In other parts of the world motorcyclists already enjoy all of these.
But at the same time, when it comes time to make *any* kind of concession to those around us, or self-police/regulate our behavior in any way we throw our toys out the stroller.
This can be clearly seen in motorcycle 'advocacy' groups actively lobbying against helmet laws, improved rider training or noise regulations.
We aren't a special class, yet we seem to wish to be treated as such. Driving/riding around producing truly earsplitting antisocial noise is nothing but douchebaggery, and LOOK AT ME behavior of the worst kind.
If we as riders took a step back from cultivating such a billy-badass image of ourselves, we might find that we actually carry a little more weight when trying to negotiate for the advantages we'd love to have.
I find it interesting that this law, already on the books, is not enforced.

The new law will modify this one.

Exactly.
If your neighbor had a car, pickup truck or construction vehicle without any sort of sound muffling at all, most folks would scream bloody murder. Hell, neighbors complain if you use a lawnmower or chain saw too early in the morning.
But if it's a motorcycle, it's OK? I don't get it. All road vehicles have sound muffling devices. Even jet aircraft have to adhere to noise restrictions.

Well on the topic of loud pipes saving lives I can attest that people definitely pay more attention to you when you are running a straight system or louder set up. I had an IXILL double can system with the packing in on my old 750 and people use to cut me off (out of not hearing me) very often. With the current straight setup on my 1K people hear it before they see it ie, pay attention. The other thing we have working against us as bikers is motorcycles can't be seen as well by cars. So I say if you want to do something to your personal bike that adds an element of personal safety for you, you should be able to do it. The only time you should be cited is if you are trying to be obnoxius to show off.
More laws suck, but quiet is better. I hope it's heavily enforced if it passes.
personally, I don't know how someone can even stand to ride with open headers.... Law is well overdue, like stated above I hope it is enforced. I am not sure if my RC will pass, but I do have the stock setup which is fine with me as well.

Well I'm not trying to make waves here and I'm not trying to annoy anyone while on my bike. With that said it has been my personal experiance that loud exhaust is the best way to get people to pay attention to you driving cars. Wearing bright colors and having an air horn is kinda nerdy in my personal opinion
Eh, so not worth it.
Re: Enforcement. I agree. What's the point in another damned law if we aren't going to enforce it?
Wrong Law gadget, that applies to cars & trucks, motorcycles go by RSA 266:59-a, not RSA 266:59
http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/rsa/...6/266-59-a.htm
266:59-a Motorcycle Noise Levels. –
I. No person shall operate a motorcycle which has a measured noise level of more than 106 decibels on the decibel meter when measured 20 inches from the exhaust pipe at a 45 degree angle while the engine is operating at 2,800 revolutions per minute for one and 2 cylinder motorcycles and 3,500 revolutions per minute for any motorcycle with 3 or more cylinders.
II. No person shall pass for the purposes of the inspection required by RSA 266:1 any motorcycle which has a measured noise level of more than 106 decibels on the decibel meter when measured 20 inches from the exhaust pipe at a 45 degree angle while the engine is operating at 2,800 revolutions per minute for one and 2 cylinder motorcycles and 3,500 revolutions per minute for any motorcycle with 3 or more cylinders.
II-a. No person shall operate in this state any motorcycle which produces a sound level in excess of 106 decibels on the A scale, when measured in accordance with the provisions of the Society of Automotive Engineers Recommended Practice ANSI/SAE J-1287 annual report on "Measurement of Exhaust Sound Levels of Stationary Motorcycles.''
III. Any person who violates the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a violation and shall be fined not less than $100 nor more than $300.

How many miles under your belt? I bet most of the folks here that prefer quiet bikes have at least 100,000 miles of riding. I have well over 150,000.
I live on a steep hill and get to hear open pipe bikes rip up it in the Summer, thankfully it's not a busy road, but it's annoying when they do go by, especially really late. None of my neighbors like it either. One's a state Senator, any guesses how he'll vote?
