ATTENTION IN THE HADDOCK! - NHMS Improvements

"Installing 260 linear feet of new FIA approved concrete curbing riders right and left turn 3 through turn 4. Increased the run off riders right from turn 6 through turn 9 minimum run off is now 30 feet where before it was 2 feet. The famed tree house is long gone. The safety position between turn 4 & 9 is also gone increasing the run off by 25 feet on both sides. You will also notice the lack of pine needle producing trees in the area."

nice. kinda gonna miss the tree house though cause it was an easy place to spot flags from a few different spots. plus it was a good spot for "aerial" photographs

that was FIA. which really isnt a issue as long as its only deployed on the inside of a corner with no chance of going towards the outside. if you have the outside curbing, then the retaining wall becomes a issue

Wait, you're saying that stuff is what Tom is talking about?

That VIR shit looks like a cheese grater, how is that possibly not an issue?

I'm sure that stuff can't be what Tom is talking about.

The style of curbing in question, FIA and FIM, is one and the same as far as I know.

The curbing at VIR is, for the most part, placed on the inside of the turns but it sounds as if this is not going to be the case at NHMS based on the e-mail Mr Butler has posted....at least that's how I'm reading it when I see the words "...riders right and left turn 3 through turn 4..."

For the people who are not up to speed on the curbing being talked about

Below is a rider's perspective of the actual curbing in place at VIR.

It should be noted that the concrete-colored section pictured below is NOT part of the new style curbing

Re: ATTENTION IN THE HADDOCK! - NHMS Improvements

They already had some of this in place coming down the hill in 9. I dont see it as a big deal. If they did it right then the curbing would be in a place you wouldnt normally ride anyway. It has to be better then the old rumble strip in 3. My biggest fear there was having my puck get caught up in the rumble strip and pulling me off the bike. With the new curbing I see that being a 0% chance of a possibility assuming they have installed it going in the correct direction. With the added run off these have been two really good improvements imo

I dont think so. If I remember correctly from the conversation VIR had the rumble strip before the new curb that would suck you in. Look at the photo bergs put up. Hopefully NHIS was smarter and didnt include the grey patch. Id like to think they are.

Re: ATTENTION IN THE HADDOCK! - NHMS Improvements

If it's like what was in 9 last year, I think it's an improvement. All the ledges fall in the appropriate direction and there is no lip to catch you as you slide off the edge of the track (unlike the traditional curbing). Aside from the grey curbing in the VIR pic below (which sucks, by the way... rips knee pucks off like nobody's business), that lip on the outside edge is the big issue I see. Imagine smacking your tail bone into that as you slide off track. The curbing in 9 didn't have that. I distinctly remember sweeping pea gravel from the track straight over the curbing without getting hung up on any lip in the process.

Sounds alot like things to benefit cars... Bikes benefit as an added bonus.

    Gonna miss the shade/trees.

I would be concerned about that concrete lip behind the curbing as some people have mentioned already. And on the outside of the turns??

If there is no back concrete lip or grey dental molding, I'm sure it'll be groovy.

Re: ATTENTION IN THE HADDOCK! - NHMS Improvements

The gray curbing in the picture has nothing to do with the new curbing we are talking about. That concrete section pictured in the VIR photo was already in place long before the new curbing was installed. Again, nothing to do with the new curbing.

This new style of curbing is designed to discourage competitors from cutting the course which means that having it on the outside of any given turn is not necessary. I'm curious as to what the motivation is to have this installed on the outside of T3 and T4.

Guys, Outside of three might mean the left side of the braking chute, which needs something IMO. It could also mean they cleaned up the jump. Both of which would be good. Complain when they don't improve, then complain when they do. Win-Win!!!
