ok, who wants to know what about corner working?
<---this guy
what do you have to do and how much $$ do you get?
responsibilities vary from flagging, to picking up, to directing traffic... depends on the need and the day.
Will know more about pay scale later... but you aren't going to get rich doing it...but there are perks to the job that you find out about as you become a regular.
I never expected to get rich but figured it would be a fun new way to see the races and pay for some gas to head up there.
I mailed in a US Marshalls form last year with a check and did the same this year and have not gotten a acknowledgement. This year I sent off the check, waited, sent off a email, nothing. What gives? Mike Walsh
I usually help out a couple times a year. I also help out Miles. I send in the 10 to support them anyway. How's "In Your Corner" doing?
I pulled in over $600 last year + Lunche + Dinner + Beer + free entry into NHMS + a Hoodie + Adrenalin rushes picking everyone up + a tan + new friends + new responsibilities + watching racing + learning why some things happen in certain areas. There is more but that is good for now.![]()

new to this whole scene, what exactly is corner working? Anyone care to explain?
On Saturday morning you take a course. About your own personal safety then the safety of the racers. You also learn about flags, radio protocol, your responsibilities, standard operating procedures, gas and oil spills, fire extinquishers. Then you are assigned to work in a corner with another experienced cornerworker. You #1 duty is to warn racers of danger ahead by using various flags.

Sorry for all the questions, which track is this for?
Do corner workers get free track time?

I'd like to work, but always seem to be racing. I've heard of people doing half-days, but I guess you need some CW experience for that? I've also talked to a couple other racers who said they'd CW if the meeting wasn't during Sat AM practice. Not criticizing, just throwing a couple things out there that may help the CW #'s if addressed.
I'll CW that day I'm not racing. If the morning is not wet I'll get my practice in. If it is going to rain on the day I am not racing I will CW.
If you can pick up a bike, You can CW. Dodgeball..

There isn't, but we are looking into options for another time for the class, where you are a racer you would most likeley be able to work, we prefer people to go through the class, but in a pinch we can work things out since you already know the flags and general procedures on the track.
One thing that looks like it will change for the workers this year is that the workers who go out to pick up fallen bikes on a live track will be required to wear a helmet going forward. Bicycle helmets will not suffice and we are leaning towards hockey helmets. This is being mandated by the track and the Marshalls are going to try to make it as pleasant as possible. I will have the specs for helmets that the track will be looking for after this weekend as well.
Also Gino, the website is most likely going to go away or get a complete overhaul, so there is not much effort going into the site right now.

Ah, gotcha. Well yeah, count me in for the "down for a friday class" group. Also, how do half days/partial days/whatever work? I've heard of some workers managing to work and race on the same day. That'd be sweet. I know of a couple for sure who practice in the AM and still CW during the day, which is also cool. I'd really, really like to do it but it's hard to justify giving up track time.
Bike helmet would be WAY preferred to race helmet, btw. What about a dirt bike helmet? I can't imagine wearing my race helmet all day.
Didn't know there was one... cool. I'll have to hit that up this summer.
I was questioning if there could be a Friday night class.

Yes, the captains will also need to wear helmets since they will be on the live track, and the captain often tends tot he fallen rider, which is on the track or in the crash zone.Originally Posted by Dangerous" Dan K;882602]Ah, gotcha. It will not be a motorcycle helmet, probably like a hockey helmet, the track is going to want something with a hard shell. We are looking to see if hockey helmets will meet their needs since they are light, and offer good ventilation. More info to come...
Also, they will have loaner helmets and we will have doo rags or something... but I personally will be buying my own helmet.
