I negotiated to 2400 for the bike, and he's adding in some ASV levers, I think I'm doing well for the price as long as everything is legit, anyone have input on that? Title is clean and clear.
I've never ridden a bike with a "racecut shift cam", do people like these?
I know it's a lot of bike for a first track bike but it seems to be a great deal to me. I'm looking Sunday, any other stuff you specifically look for on a track bike you're purchasing? I have no worries buying street bikes (bought a bunch), but don't know if theres a little thing or two that is good to check out.
personal preference? common problems?
To be honest never saw myself buying a gsxr, I'll get a bunch of crap from friends for being a gsxr squid simply because gsxr is written on it. My buddy had a 750 that was either melting rectifier plugs (thanks Pigman for the spare), not starting etc. and this just built the teasing up and up.
As far as common problems go I am not to familiar with this specific year and model.
i had a very similar track bike. its not bad for a first one at all. you got a good price on it IMO btw. gsxr squid doesnt count at the track lol
For a first track bike, an '04 Gix 600 isn't too bad. I've raced against them and in capable hands they've held their own. I guess price isn't too bad either, but that depends on the following. I'd try to find out how much time its seen on the track and by what kind of rider(s)? Was it raced or just track days? Crashed? How many times? Frame straight? Also, cannot remember if this was year that was of concern, but check for cracked weld in the frame up around the air tube inlet. Who did the suspension? If GMD, ask Pete for the 411 on the bike. I believe the "RaceCut Shift Cam" on the gixxers is supposed to allow faster shifts with less lever travel required between gears and also helps to minimize the chance of a false neutral on the track; it's not a bad thing to have. I wouldn't be real excited about the Hotbodies Bodywork.

2005 is when they started with the radial front master cylinder. 2004-2005 have crappy calipers. Parts aren't nearly as available as the 06-07.
It was one of their worst years for the GSXR 600.
But to answer your questions, I look for (in this order)....
Shock and fork internals. When refreshed
Good damper
Spare wheels
Rearsets with spares
Quick shifter
Brembo master
Good bodywork brand, not necessarily the condition
Tuner device
Maintenance - valves checked, bearings checked, etc.
other spares - swing arm, spare sprocket hubs, and triples
.... Last - clean title
Thanks, How specific is the sprung weight on the suspension? I'm happy to see the ohlins but it's sprung for 190lbs which is fine for now as I weigh 195 during the winter but slim down to 175 for the summer, is a bike sprung for 190lbs I assume that's not close enough for 175?
I have no ideas about the benefits of a proper suspension setup, and am probably not a good enough to notice any differences so should I just let it be?
Other thing I'm wonderings is do they make fake ohlins stuff? Or any other high end brand of upgrade? I feel like there would be a market for that because of the price tag, but maybe thats just because I'm coming from the car world where people put fake crap on a car to look cool for cheap and reap no performance benefits?
Well plenty of people do it, and everyone has a different view. I did it, and crashed every time I hit the track. I got on my SV and it took me 7 days to crash. What I'm getting at is that sometimes dialing back your power/bike will make you a better rider in the long run. I know it did for me. I enjoy my little gay SV so much that it's unlikely I'll ride my I4 600 at all in the coming year. As the old saying goes, it's more fun to ride a low bike fast than a fast bike slow. It's more than just that though. Corner speed, braking points, body position all become more important when you can't ham-fist your way to a fast lap. There are other reasons too. It's definitely something to think about.
I've crashed my 600 way more times than my 929. if I switch to an even smaller bike I'll probably kill myself.

^ Precisely why I sold off the ZX6-RR and got an EX500 for the track. And I've been riding for 32 years.
Go fast. Have fun. Repeat.

Sunday is almost over. Update?
Sad update... he sold it Saturday.
I'm looking at either
this:
http://cnj.craigslist.org/mcy/3623661669.html (he'd take 1800, bike has 18k miles)
this:
http://burlington.craigslist.org/mcy/3611159041.html (he has all the plastics and parts to make it a regular bike) (he'll take 2000)
or this:
http://www.nestreetriders.com/forum/...highlight=slut (if he took 2000 I might go for it)
any opinions? I'm in no hurry either, don't mind waiting for the right bike.

Check this out.

Also weraclassifides.com has tons or race/track bikes.
2400?? You kiddin me. I'd jump on in on a heartbeat. Have the engine checked and make sure the suspension is also okay.
If you don't know what you are doing the best bet would be to meet the seller at a trackday where you can get a second opinion from a number of people.

I'd be on it if he would come a lot closer to 2k, I don't think he'd appreciate my offers though.
My friend Jim is selling his SV...all set up. Really nice bike.
