I'm going to be yanking the forks to change the oil soon on my 98 zx6r, as I don't believe the oil has ever been changed. Is there anything else I should be doing while I have the forks off? I might do the fork seals just as a matter of preventative maintenance. Any other wear parts in there?
You definitely will want to do new seals. They're an inexpensive preventative maintenece item. Besides, the old seals might get a little bit roughed up when removing. Be very careful not to scrape too much metal off of the fork legs. It can be a frustrating job, so take your time. I would highly reccommend you have a service manual.
I'll be doing mine on the FZR, this weekend as well as adding new, stiffer springs.

thanks mang, I will take your advice and do the fork seals while I'm in there. I hear it can be a bitch of a job, but I got a vice, and tools, and a service manual, hopefully it goes according to plan.
Was considering springs/valves but I'm not sure if I'd notice the difference, I'm about 170 and I think that's in the sweet spot for the stock setup if I'm not mistaken![]()

I still love the smell of burnt racing fuel in the morning!
At 35,000 miles and three oil changes, I'm still on the original seals on my 9R. I would not change the seals unless they leak. It's not a hard job to do though. Seals are simple devices and you can make a seal driver out of PVC pipe.
