Last summer I installed a Vance & Hines exhaust, K&N air filter and a jet kit to tie it all togeather. I dont know a whole lot about carb. tunning. The bike seems to be running good. When I pulled the plugs this year there were black, running rich I know, they were three years old though, I dont know if that may have anything to do with it.
Tonight after a ride I used an inferred temp sensor to see if one of the exhaust pipes was hotter then the other. They both seemed to be at about 230 F. I was wondering if anyone had any sort of if this indicated anything or not. Also if anyone knows of any dyno days somewhat near mid to southern NH I think that would help in figuring out which way, if any I have to go with the tunning.
Where along the exhaust did you measure the temp? 230F is not very hot for any part of the exhaust system. When engine is under load, the headers on my bike can turn cherry red but obviously the farther away from the engine you get, the cooler the pipe will be (unless you have a CAT).
I took the temp reading as close to the block as I could get the sensor, within inches of the mounting flange.
Something isn't right. I would be inclined to say the way the measurment was taken is the culprit. 230F is on the hot side of what your water temperature can be. Your header temperature can be upwards of 800-1000F.
I would try measuring it again. Make sure your temperature sensor has enough range (degree wise) too.
Sv exaust (on mine anyway) doesn't seem to get hot like you would expect, not sure why, 230 sound low for the header pipe, but that sounds about right for every where else, my frame gets hotter than the canOriginally posted by ZX-12R

I have gotten burns from my frame, yet at the same time, my saddlebag rest right on the can (for over 100,000 miles) and it aint burnt a hole thru yet

I took it for another ride, when I got back I checked the temps again and they were both at about 360 this time. Does that sound better or still a little on the cooler side.
That is certainly more reasonable than 230F but it still seems low. Are you checking it while the bike is running or after you shut it off?
