I want more info on the history of the brain injuries.
As some may know, after an initial concussion, subsequent concussions are easy to come by. How old were some of the riders in question--had they hit they're heads before, etc?
I've hit my head a fair share of times, all in expensive retail Suomy helmets.
The first of the helmets cracked in half.
All three helmets were destroyed beyond the point of use, all three lost face shields upon impact, and in all three cases I ended up unconscious.
Does this mean that Suomy's are less safe as well?
Lets see some data on this info collected if they have it. The 'trust me, i know more' argument isn't going to hold up anymore.
I don't know if you've ever had an arai iridium shield, because if you did i doubt you would make this claim, dropping buzzwords like "R&D". The shields are junk, they wear out in half a season of normal riding. Arai assured me that was because of the previous vendor that they were buying them from, so I bought another $89.95 iridium shield that was "the new design" and that one had a shorter life than the previous. That is the first off reason that I stopped using the helmets. And i paid $175 brand new for second RX7 and 600 for my first. Bringing my grand total closer to $1000 with no snazzy paint jobs. MY HJC shields have already outlasted the life of the arais by double, and none of the cheek pads have fallen out, unlike both of my arais. And check out Arais website and let me know how easy it is to get in touch with anyone. Contact info? non-existant. That's reason number two. Now I have to go help some chick change a flat.....Originally posted by OreoGaborio
Some companies put alot more R&D into their shields than others... look at the price of sunglasses out there... I mean, shit, I just bought some 180 dollar Smith shades (for alot less than that though) but typically optically correct sunglasses with impact resistance go for 50 bucks & up, easy... why should a helmet shield be any different? It's expected to stop rocks & debris at some pretty good speeds, right?
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
Alex, what year of manufacture are your helmets? I can buy a brand new Suomy right now from Bettencourt's for about $120, but it was made in 2001. Illegal for racing use.Originally posted by a13x
Some of these comments make me laugh... I especially like the 'banning helmet brand XX so that Arai sells more'.. Yea that's exactly how sponsorship and relationships work inside the Industry.....
For what it's worth. I've bought two Arai Quantum/f's for a grand total of $400. Both with bling-bling Okada paintjobs. One was brand new never used, the other was slightly used.
$250 for never used
$140 for slightly used (included dark shield, a $80 value)
Shop around and cruise the Classifieds on the various MSG Boards.
worth checking.

I have not been around this industry for that long in comparison to Jerry or Don or Tony or even Paul (who's my boss and my friend), but I've been involved enough and seen enough to know this: Arai's are the best. PERIOD ...and to quote them, "There is a difference."
I will not have any data for you. I will not argue with you. I will not add anything else to this thread. I will however tell you a few things. I have traveled to Daytona and viewed the 200 from the Arai suite back when they sponsered it. I have met the two most important people from Arai of North America...They actually know who we(Moto Market) are...I actually have Brian Westin's (he is the head of Arai North America) cell phone number...I am in touch with Kathy, the Arai technical specialist in PA, on a regular basis for parts and to have questions answered...so yes I'm name dropping, but I just want everyone to believe me when I say that there is NO WAY Arai had anything to do with this. Arai is way above such tactics...to even suggest it is idiotic. And to say Penguin will benefit is idiotic also as they don't sell helmets. We at Moto Market do and we know there is a difference. I have been to the dealer shows in Indy and tried on every helmet offered to the American public and I can honestly say, NOTHING fits like an Arai...and in the end, it is the fit that saves your brain! ...so I will keep it short and somewhat sweet...
Regarding fit and the ALL-IMPORTANT price (but come on guys, stop being cheap! - it's your brain!!...as far as I know, they are not transplanting or cloning brains yet...), come and see me at either the track in Garage 10 (near tech) or at the store in Acton, MA. I can fit most people into an Arai Astral-X model (which is their generic intermediate oval SHAPE - NOT CONSTRUCTION or SIZE, BUT SHAPE!!!! - and I have way more knowledge than that on their helmets - contact me) for FAR LESS than $400!! Due to this issue arising, we at Moto Market are starting a Racing Program and offering a discount to liscensed road-racers. The Astral-X model delivered to road-racers in tax-free NH is around $325-$350 if one chooses white or black and hardly any more for Aluminum Silver.
Regarding the "You get what you pay for" theme, it's true: We have an analogy we like to use at Moto Market: "If you were parachuting, would you buy a cheap parachute or the best you can buy!?!?" Arai helmets are the best in the world. They do not all cost $600. Safety is the same in all of their models. Yes, the lighter, more aerodynamic, more ventilated models with a lower center of gravity and a nicer wicking interior can cost $600 or more with a replica paint job, BUT you can get the SAME SAFETY with their $400 Astral-X model...it just does not have all of the features that the others do. IF you do not fit into that model, there are 3 OTHER SHAPES!!! that I can work with in their line-up to fit you! Beyond shape, we can change the cheek pads (thicknesses range from 12 to 40 mm) AND headliners (thicknesses range from 5 to 12 mm) in those models to CUSTOM FIT the helmet to YOU!!!...which makes it the safest helmet for YOU!!
Stop making this out to be witch hunt! They only want fewer injuries! Safety is the concern here, NOT MONEY! I have many friends in the paddock and I want all of them wearing Arai helmets. Years ago, I of course started with my girlfriend, Lisa #196...and then my good friend Ilya #760...and after watching the "Young Gun" Shane Narbone #164 quickly drop his lap times last year in an HJC, I had to sponser him for his SAFETY because I like the kid!!!...and I now have succeeded in convincing Paul to allow me to start a Racing Program so that ALL can be SAFE...come see us in Garage 10!!!
Thank you for your time...
Allan Jones
P.S. Regarding Ben Spies, if he goes to MotoGP, do you think he'll be wearing an HJC?!?!?!? I doubt it...it took Nicky one year before ditching Joe Rocket. I bet he was laughed at in the paddock...
Also, take a count of how many MotoGp riders wear Arais and Nolans... Other than the Schuberth brand for their Concept model, those are the only two helmet brands we carry at Moto Market...
Allan, serious question here. Do you have Arai's permission to advertise reduced prices (or prices at all) online like this? I thought they had their panties in a bunch oiver this sort of thing?
derek
Please explain your reasoning here.Originally posted by Allan

How does racing on a marginally faster bike suddenly require different safety equipment?
Are the crashes in MotoGP so much more violent that the idea of using a certain helmet or type of leather laughable?
Does HJC have much of a market precense in Europe?
How about Joe Rocket?
Yeah, Joe Rocket is a joke--only majority of the top AMA racers wearing them. If Nicky was so safety concerned, think he would let his brothers continue to wear them?
I think it has more to do with marketing, target audience, and the amount of $$ sponsoring companies are willing to throw at potential riders for the exposure.
Speaking only about Joe Rocket leathers...
I believe it was widely distributed that the gear the riders wore bore little resemblance to what the public bought.
Another reason I love my Syed Leathers...
And yes, there are other smaller leather companies that also produce a top quality product... I just haven't used them so can't endorse them.
Agreed, top riders are not wearing off-the-rack leathers, but JR does custom suits as well, just have to call em up.Originally posted by 35racer

I was not referring to size differences... but material and workmanship (stitching)
Again... have no proof... just restating what I "heard".
Easy enough to test if you get your hands on a suit by a top rider.
Your dealer cost on an AC-12 is 42.95? How about an NESR deal on some of those? $75 seems like a pretty good price point, how about it?Originally posted by SBT Deb
To give to a better idea of what I am talking about, my dealer cost on an HJC High end Helmet is $42.95. Common retail is anywhere from $179.99-$250.00. Look at my COST of the helmet.
Degsy,
My prices quoted were not actual prices, but general numbers to help people understand that you do not have to spend $600 or more for an Arai. As for discounting, well, anyone can sell anything for whatever they want, so I am only advertising that we can fit road-racers into Arai helmets for less than they apparently think, which could possibly be as little as AROUND $325 to $350 depending on which model they ultimately fit into best. These were and are not actual advertised prices in any way, shape, or form. If you noticed, all of my prices were rounded-off numbers.
I meant to help my fellow road-racers understand Arai helmets and possibly convince a few to seek me out for help, not advertise actual prices in order to make money on quantities sold. I think Arai of North America will understand my goal.
...Is another witch-hunt underway!?!??!
Allen...dude your on the NESR forum of course there is another witch hunt underway!!! I have only been using this forum for a little while and was quick to realize that a good bitchfest could easily be drummed up![]()
Heheh.. witch hunt is right...
Here is some more kindling for the fire:
HJC currently has, and have had a number of helmets certified to Snell
standards that use the CS designation. All helmets that continue to
appear
on our listings remain a part of the Snell certification program unless
otherwise noted. Thank you for the information, we will likely follow
up to
ascertain the details of the action.

No, absolutely not. I am glad that you are offering to help out racers with purchasing quality helmets. I just wanted to make sure you weren't doing anything that would make Arai prick their ears up. I appreciate the clarification.Originally posted by Allan

...and as an aside, we have a couple of preferred vendors here, including one that sells helmets. Just an FYI.
I think in this case that in the interests of safety we should allow your offer to stay on here.
Derek
That was a more clarifying statement from Jerry that i just noticed. I still do not believe the cost of the helmet should be the emphasis.

This is important information to the discussion; to my knowledge, no tracks or racing organizations have ever banned HJC helmets. It was my understanding that a SNELL approved helmet is currently approved for racing at any track in this country. If this is incorrect, I would like to learn where this is not the case.Originally posted by SBT Deb

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST PEOPLE!!! When did NESR become "Sandinmyvaganiaville"?????
God damn... we're all on the same team here are we not? FUCK.
Everyone friggin relax.... Granted this is an important issue, but we're all pissing eachother off & making enemies for no good fuckin reason. Everyone take a step back & look at the big picture instead of getting stuck in this "i'm right, you're wrong" mindset BEFORE ALL THE FACTS ARE EVEN AVAILABLE TO US. It's completely unproductive. This entire thread is totally dragging NESR down the shitter.
