Someone who buys a liter bike as their first ride is not necessarily an idiot. But the statistical evidence suggests that a liter bike is not a sound choice for a first motorcycle...

My theory
If you get a 1 or a 6 or even a 250 for that matter, whats the difference!
If your not out to break any records or win a race you shouldn't be pushing any bike faster than you can reasonably go (at least on public roads),
I can see where racing is different. you want to be able to control the bike before you step up to the uncontrollable.
Also this is like having a degree right out of college.
just because you spent x amount of dollars and worked your way up from x class to z class doesn't mean you know what you are talking about, it just means thats how you did it, and now you think thats how everyone should do it.

You really need someone to answer this? Let me help you out a bit. Say youre out riding. Just cruising around not pushing anything. You know the typical enjoying the day. Something startles you. A bump, a car what ever it doesnt matter. In your panic and lack of experience you grab a hand full of throttle. The 250 might lurch a bit and the chances are youll recover pretty easily. The R6 will probably send you for a bit of a ride. Might pick the front wheel up which in turn will cause you to grab a hand full of brake. If the wheel is on the ground then maybe youll just get some wobbles or it might toss you depending on how much you panic. The R1 will more then likely pull up the front wheel. Once again you panic due to lack of experience which also got you into this mess to begin with. You grab the brake but guess what the wheel is off the ground. You dont stop so you grab more brake. Wheel comes down and BANG youre tossed over the front on your ass and if youre really unlucky the bike runs you over.
Do you understand the difference now? Its about 120hp.

before even considering buying a street bike i played in the dirt for 12 years or so, I am aware of being aware. I am never complacent on my bike ans i ride like i cant be seen. I'm not out to endanger myself or others, and i know thats the main point here is that why buy a big bike if you dont know how to ride.
Yes i understand the difference between the dirt and street, but there are many similarities in safe riding.
Also what instances where something startles you where you would ever get on the gas? Also why are you startled in the first place, are you not looking out for problems?
In my experience (so far) the gas is not the right control to use when faced witha split second decision.
For the record i have already been cutoff more times than i can count as well as ranoff the road, almost rear ended and almost hit cuz someone crossed the yellows in a dump truck. The only time i used the gas to evade was when i was alomost rear ended and i am aware of it, I didn't panic and i never sit at a light in neutral!
say you're buddy takes off in front of you, on a straight....not reckless but kicks it up a notch....you crack the throttle thinking you're in 3rd and it isn't bad but quickly realize you're actually in 2nd as you look at the sky through the windscreen.....panic, grab front break to stop....doesn't work, front wheel is 4 feet off the ground....wheel comes down but front break is still on = bad things

wouldn't happen on a smaller bike w/ less power....and by the time you worked your way up to a bigger bike, you'd be experienced enough to avoid a situation like this entirely
One thing i learned from riding dirt,
always know what gear you are in, I know it can bite you in the ass.
I took alot of valuable lessons from the dirt, and translated them to the street.

I keep hearing the argument " if you panic and grab too much throtle" Just curious has this happened to someone? Ive paniced and grabbed too much front brake on my dirtbike before, but never grabbed the throttle in a panic. Has this happened to anyone? Ive been on street bikes for 10 years or so... and refined my riding skills alot and I dont feel I panic on the street anymore, but I was curious to hear some of these throttle pulling stories.

I never said you dont know how to ride. And apparently you can predict the future which is awesome. So then you already know youll never crash right?
I had one moment I still remember back in my inexperienced days. Just riding down Rt1 I forget where I was going. If you have ever been on Rt1 around here its almost always being worked on because of the lovely bumps in it. I hit a good size pot hole. Nothing huge but nothing youre going to see 100 yards down the road so there is no time to react. It shook me on the seat which caused me to move in a way I wasnt expecting and my wrist on the throttle dropped which caused the bike to accelerate. Luckily nothing came of it but these are the situations that you can pay for. However I guess since you can predict every situation in the future then youre ok. BTW I have a box of chocolates on the table. Just dont ruin your dinner.

its just the majority is, thats all. Just realize that statistically and logically, its a bad choice to learn on a big bike.
Why do most people repeatedly make this argument about themselves? I fail to realistically see how someone in another state buying a liter bike as their first bike has any effect on myself. As far as I'm concerned, you're all a bunch of fucking automatons.

Yes i can predict the future, and i see that if i am not paying attention to what i and others are doing i will go down. whats the difference if i were on a smaller bike? thats it.
I know you can't predict what others are doing but you can be aware that they are there and they dont see you, so you should be ready for the worst.
Also the bump incident, that sux, but i dont typically ride close enough behind someone to not see the road ahead, and yes i do know rte1 well, it sux, thats why i will never take my bike there.
Hey you left out the 750cc class!!! 750's are pushing 120hp stock, 1000cc's are like 150hp.
Meh it could affect you even if they are across the country. Depending on what youre state youre in and how the insurance is run it could increase your premiums so the insurance companies can recover the cost of jackasses on bikes they shouldnt be on.
Also if you dont remember. New England is a rather small area with many small states. I ride with people all the time from surrounding states. Its not much distance to any of them from here.
Union thats a good example. I have fortuneatly never come across that. I dont advocate newbies buiying liter bikes either. but on the other hand can you blame them? they are all over tv, and always the focal points of a dealerhsip showroom. I wanted a 750 when I bought my 1000 but I got it as a left over for about 1300 less than the 750 was. So i bought it. But I also am not a "newbie" either.

I wasnt riding close to anyone. I was riding alone in light traffic. I could see the road just fine for quite a distance. Apparently not only can you predict the future but you must have eyes like superman. I wish I was you.
Rt1 in almost unavoidable out here. Just to get to meet with the people I ride with I have to take it for a few miles.
