If you run into a wall with a helmet on, you still ran into a wall.
I'm curious just how many people are usually out driving around at night when blizzard conditions are forecast for the next eight hours? Is it that much of a problem?
“It's 2 minutes for any capable adult.”
The fact that the government treats it like a privilege does not mean that's right and ethical. Many of our rights are treated by the government as privileges these days -- that just means that we have a lot of our rights being violated.
Another example.

How about riding in a car? Is that a right? No government approval required. No license required. People are free to ride in cars all they want without special permission. Does that make riding in a car a right?
The best time to go out to eat is in the middle of a big snow storm, and this storm was no exception. No traffic, no wait to be seated, nice quiet dining room, and a waitress/bartender who was happy to have some customers. These factors combine to make a great dining experience.
I like to patronize businesses that stay open in less than ideal conditions.

Yes, it is. The fact that the government doesn't screw with that right isn't what makes it a right. The fact that it's a choice you make about your own life, that doesn't violate anyone else's choices about their own lives, is what makes it a right.
I'll say it again. The whole concept of liberty is that you have the right to do anything that doesn't violate the equal rights of anyone else.
That's the basic mindset of freedom, which sadly is largely lost these days. We each have the inherent right to make our own decisions about our own lives, provided only that we respect the equal rights of others to do the same.

that's what I heard, about the tree branch, normally I don't get my generator going that quickly, I wait a couple hours, but due to the cold temps and not knowing how long it was going to be out due to the storm, I decided to power up right away and not let my house cool down any more, the power went out just as my thermostat is programmed to bring the house temp from 58° to 66°. I need to install a signal of some type to let me know when the power comes back, I ran my generator about an additional 45 minutes after the power came back on cause I didn't think it would get fixed so quick
I disagree with you about driving under the speed limit during a storm, its those in a rush that cause the accidents and should be the ones who are not on the road, I have in fact been stopped for speeding (under limit , but faster than conditions warrant) I am one of those who do drive slower on snow covered roads, usually 15-25 under, I also increase my following distance, 4wd and AWD are great for going too fast and getting you stuck further into the snowbank, it does not help your braking capabilities, nor does 4wd increase your visibility in poorer vision conditions.
less traffic does help the snowplow guys, I had a plow route back in the early '90s one of my plow jobs was a convenience store/gas station, during the blizzard of '93, it took me less time than normal to keep the lot cleared due to no traffic except other plow guys coming to get fuel even though we had 4-5 times as much snow

just because you say something over and over doesnt make it true. driving is a privilege awarded by the state in which you reside. a privilege that they have the right to take away for numerous reasons. not least of which is when one demonstrates that they are not responsible enough to adhere by the traffic laws and receive numerous violations.
if your statement were true then i wouldnt have had to wait until i was 16 to get my license by your logicl, at 13 i couldve drove as long as i didnt violate anyones rights or i wouldnt have had to wait until i was 18 to smoke or 21 to drink.
you have the right to travel, that doesnt mean by car. walking, bicycle, dog sled, skis...sure...but not by car
edit: you keep saying liberty but driving doesnt fall under liberty either. unless its a jeep liberty. and those things suck

is that where you stopped reading? because i clearly said "if you NEED to go out then do it" also the other half of my argument had nothing to do with saving you from yourself, it had to do with letting the municipalities do their jobs to respond and clear roads for safer travel

OK, I guess I need to repeat something else I said: That's the basic mindset of freedom, which sadly is largely lost these days. We each have the inherent right to make our own decisions about our own lives, provided only that we respect the equal rights of others to do the same.
You have failed to achieve this mindset, and apparently believe that rights are only those things the government bestows upon you out of the goodness of its heart; freedom is only what the government allows you to have. I'm sorry for you, but my sympathy does not extend to being OK with you and those like you violating rights and denying liberty for the rest of us.

So, owning a gun is a right. Travel is also a right. It is such a basic right that it isn't even mentioned in the constitution or the bill of rights. It is seen as so basic as to not require mention.
Because the technology has changed, that doesn't mean that I'm limited to owning a flintlock rifle.
Equally, because the technology has changed, that doesn't mean that I'm limited to traveling with a horse and carriage.
jesus christ, when did you guys turn into a bunch of whiny bitches?
spend all this time crying that the government wont let you drive anywhere. fuck, one of you lives in NH and there was no "driving ban" and is still complaining about a "driving ban". FFS, go. drive in it. zero fucks will be given on my part unless it somehow affects me. complaining that the government is trying to protect you, were you gonna go somewhere? sounds to me that all your jobs were closed. mine was. so where are you going? oh you werent gonna go anywhere anyway because the roads suck? then STFU already. oh, you didnt get as much snow as they thought you might? TBSS...i guessim sorry precautions were taken.
everyone on here is obviously smarter than the general public, so yes, things like "driving bans" are put in place to keep the people too stupid to know better off the road. im sorry that rules are made to the lowest common denominator...but ya know...no child left behind right?

having a gun is expressly written
travel is expressly written
driving requires a license that is appointed by the state. this license awards you the privilege to drive a vehicle on public state/federal funded roadways. if the state decides to shut down those roadways and prohibit travel, then you can travel. would it be easier to just tell everyone that theyre driving privileges/license/registrations are temporarily suspended until further notice?

I drove during the ban.
I drove home from my essential job. I don't know if that was against the spirit of the rules or not, but I did so cautiously, and so as not to annoy oxx, Phil, or Jason.
