some people (myself included) just want something to go from A to B that's reliable and gets good gas mileage and toyota does that well...i don't think many people care how old the tech is if it works and costs them less money in repairs over time

This. I'll gladly "overpay" for older tech if it stays out of the shop and costs less in the long run.
Yota spends more on mechanical stuff while companies like Ford and KIA chase the infotainment crowd.

this is what i'm constantly analyzing in my new wagon/car thread...i want to pick up one of those buick tourx's but i'm constantly saying in my head stick with toyota or honda or mazda cause they won't give me as many problems hopefully...i could get an older venza that would be more reliable but at the expense of gas mileage...same thing with a honda element...wish i could find a tsx sportwagon with low miles that wasn't 200 miles away

People do care about the tech. A 2014 Tesla Model S fits your description, but noobody wants to drive them because its just very old tech.
A Yota buyer and a Model S buyer are hardly the same. As far as EV tech a 2014 is like going back decades for a ICE vehicle.

This is back to the 'are EVs really reliable' argument. They are, but people find ways to not believe it.
def doesn't fit my description in my car thread cause i don't want a BEV...may be able to be talked into a hybrid but i doubt that...i feel the focus should be making hybrids and plug in hybrids better and more affordable instead of jumping right to selling all BEVs in a few years...these politicians are pretty stupid if they think this is going to work in that short of a time...very curious if it will be sustainable in the future with all that's required to create the batteries...hoping there will be new battery tech that will come out and be more sustainable, better for the environment and fully recyclable but i doubt that as well

why do you believe it?...tesla is right near the bottom as far as dependability goes...they had to poll owners in this study cause tesla won't release the data...and between MA and RI you have a service network of 4 around boston and 1 around providence...not exactly convenient or cheap i imagine...do they even provide courtesy vehicles?...hard pass...

yes, broken door handle is worse than burning oil if your mission is making EVs unreliable
i would love to see the full list of common issues for both. online, you only get complaints. you need both positive and negative reviews to make viable conclusion. CR's review is red-yellow-green and has no data.
when you can't get into your car and it's freezing out that's kind of a problem...but that's factored into all the other brands dependability numbers as well
A lot bigger concerns listed then a broken door handle but keep slurping the kool aid.

You said post the issues, not deep dive data sets. There's more listed there then just door handles as you imply.
The same info is available for Tesla and Yota and it's all we have to compare. We don't get to see the breakdown of everything.
Even if we did get to see everything, convincing you that Yota is more reliable then Tesla would be like getting a flat earther to admit the earth is round.
If the car has to go back in the shop and isn't on the road for whatever reason, it's not as reliable/dependable as vehicles that keep pounding pavement. I don't care if it's an EV, hybrid, plug in or straight ICE. The more issues I have to deal with the less happy I am. There's every indication that the odds are I'm gonna spend more time dealing with issues if I own a Tesla then if I own a Toyota.Warping brake rotors and difficulties with the complex, electrically-operated retracting doorhandles were also mentioned by numerous owners. Other problem areas included inoperable windshield wipers, leaking battery cooling pumps, trunklid alignment, and suspension alignment.

To play devil's advocate on even Toyota having issues my mom's I believe 2008 Rav 4 had spontaneously started smoking while driving and come to find out it's because head lifted out of the block due to aluminum block known issue and the engine needed to have retapping and time certs installed. Expensive but rather fine otherwise. Known issue on those motors that was used throughout the line up.
Her 2011? I think white limited with metallic white paint had a factory issue where the paint started peeling off in places. Also some to find out a common issue from Yota. They were refusing to cover it forever and eventually gave in and agreed it's their fault and started covering them as a recall.
Ironically our 2017 Hyundai silver is now also delaminating in similar fashion but no word so far from them covering it. Their white and silver cars and an issue.
My dad's 2017 Sienna had a hard vibration at 1500 rpm or so. Engine related. Toyota said there's no issue and put felt in bottom of center storage. I said it's still there. They kept it there for a day and said it's "part of the car character, no issue"
Lo and behold there is a hard mount to an exhaust directly underneath the driver seat in center tunnel. No rubber. Most people on forums just remove them. I guess dealer was right it was a "character of car" but that's simply unacceptable.
I'd still recommend Toyota or Honda to any non car person and that's partially why they drive them but still they certainly are far from perfect and that's not even a dated tech problem, but purely mechanical.
With that said pretty good overall otherwise.
