I've read some of the same horror stories, including a guy with what looks like similar damage to mine that ended up taking 6 months to repair. Hoping for the best, won't get a call from the insurance adjuster until Tuesday.

Is it driveable or is it f'd? Hard to tell the damage in the picture?

She's pretty f'd. I'm able to move it in the driveway, but the front end is out of whack by 5" or so. Hood, fenders, roof are crushed, rear glass is gone, headlight gone, windshield toast, rear lenses cracked, dented everywhere.

That looks grim. I know those tail lights alone are $5k from Ford. Yes, thousand.

A Tesla from 2022 needs a new battery? Kind of curious how that's even possible, I'd think the software would prevent you from damaging it that much.

It was just a guess on every ones part. It had all sorts of warnings like reduced range, reduced power, service battery etc among all sorts of other things. They did call me today and said they had more coming in but i think my moment has passed. Flooding the market with all these cheap teslas is bringing the value of them way down.

Tesla or not, buying a high mileage ex-rental is a recipe for trash.

Really depends if someone hit something driving it. Miles do not tell that story. Teslas have no powertrain maintenance, there's no way to under service the car.

Anytime have you multiple people operating stuff, especially if they don't own it, the abuse level is higher.

As I mentioned earlier, a large portion of the EV fleet went out on rideshare programs. A lot of those drivers can't even afford their own 5k beater. It shouldn't be a surprise that the things got trashed.

Hertz has been renting ICE stuff on programs to rideshare drivers for years and knows this full well. In the Boston area, it's a separate fleet that regular customers don't get put into for good reason.

Re: Here comes the electric pickup

My 4runner was rental in Ohio. Some nicks and dings but I didn't want to spend a lot so it fit the bill. Inside and engine bay were minty. Just slowly doing schedule maintenance ahead of schedule and it's doing great. Definitely a higher risk of fuckery but I'm pretty happy after 1.5 years or so. I definitely feel like it's more reliable than my BMW at the same mileage. But I did the ass whipping on that car.

Re: Here comes the electric pickup

I could see a low mileage rental being a great buy - since most are probably rented by business travelers and only go from airport to hotel to office and back. Pretty easy use case and I would think most business travelers aren't out there abusing a nissan rogue.

i mean if you dont have access to home charging this sucks ass.
but most evs when they are plugged up they will pull juice from the grid to maintain battery temps in extreme cold and heat.
so if this is your personal car, just keep the thing plugged up while your home.

my beautiful wife on the other hand will let the fucking battery be at less than 20% soc and think she can do her morning commute with zero problems. meanwhile the car will use about 5% of the battery just trying to bring things up to temp.

I had a VW bus that was like that, 20mpg no problem, all summer long, sub zero weather, the gas heater dropped it to under 10, down to 5 or 6 if it was minus 20

Is this the vehicles themselves or is it the fault of the public charging stations?

My read is a combo: It's too cold for the cars to start DC fast charging but they also apparently can't start the preconditioning process on a DC fast charger? Makes me wonder what would happen if they plugged into a boring old Level 1 or Level 2 charger? I'm also wondering if these cars were allowed to get too low on SOC, and the cold also sapped the 12v battery down too far?

50/50 problem. Tesla could and should warn drivers that cold weather is forecast and will cut tomorrow's range by 1/3. But that doesn't really matter. You still get people too stupid or lazy to act on the forecast and prepare for it.

They are getting more in. It will be a steady stream of them as they cancel the rental agreements of the ones still out there. Some people rent them for months at a time and they cant just go take them.
